Comment: Pyramid Lake is the largest natural lake in Nevada (Lake Tahoe is
in both California and Nevada. Lake Mead is in Arizona and NV).
The lake is the terminus of the Truckee River, which drains Lake
Tahoe. You can see the Truckee entering the lake at the bottom of
the image. The whole area around Pyramid Lake is Indian reservation
belonging to the Paiute nation, and was the sight of the last major
battle between whites and natives. Pyramid lake is famous for its
large cutthroat trout (the largest trout ever caught was in Pyramid
Lake) and for the very interesting geological formations and hot
springs. Every summer the lake becomes a popular destination for
water enthusiasts. The large island in the lake is Anaho Island,
which is one of the major pelican nesting areas in North America.
The lake gets its name from a rock formation just north of Anaho
Island that is shaped like a pyramid (small, bright dot near coast).
It was named by John C. Fremont, who was the first white man to lay
eyes on this desert treasure.
East of Pyramid lake is the dry lakebed of Winnemucca lake. On this
image vegetation is represented as green colours, evaporite deposits
are represented in blues and whites.
As a result of careless water use along the Truckee River, Pyramid
Lake and the life within it is in great danger. To lose this lake
